Krotoszyn is located in the southern part of Wielkopolska, on the border of two important economic regions: Wielkopolska and Lower Silesia. Two important railroad lines and roads cross here. The first runs north to south (Gniezno-Wroclaw), the second from east to west (Lodz-Zielona Gora).

The city and municipal district cover 258 square kilometers, 26 of which are in the city proper and 232 belong to the district. The total population is 41338 people, 30031 live in the city and 11307 in the district.

The district has a farming-industrial character.
